Arsenal have emerged as favourites to sign RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano according to reports from Germany. The highly-rated French defender has less than a year left on his current deal and has yet to agree to new terms with Leipzig.
It is understood that the current scenario facing the German outfit is close to a mini-crisis with the player and club far from agreeing on a new deal. Earlier in the week, RB Leipzig chief Oliver Mintzlaff revealed the current options available for the club and player as they look to resolve the growing rift.
“‘Upa’ is an extremely important player for us and one of the most sought-after talents in Europe.
“And we can assure that we have a clear understanding with him and his agent he won’t leave us on a free. We can’t afford that as a club.
“There are only two options: prolong or leave. I am sure we’ll soon find out in which direction it’s going.”
This is great news for the Gunners as they are likely to get a cut-price deal for the 21-year-old defender. Arsenal boss has identified the defence as a major weakness and is set to be given funds to address this problem.
